Health information we would like to share with you

With the arrival of spring, dog owners are receiving reminder notices from their veterinarians about the yearly booster shots,  lyme disease vaccines, heartworm checks and preventatives, rabies shots and flea/tick control.

We, at Quincy Collies, would like to remind you that all these vaccinations and preventatives do carry risks.  Be careful not to overstress the immune system by doing too much at once and keep the following in mind.

1) Only vaccinate for those diseases that your dog really is at risk for.

2) When possible, ask for the single dose vaccines-they are much safer. Separate those by at least two weeks.

3) When giving the rabies vaccine, do NOT give any other vaccines at the same time. Rabies is very hard on the immune system.

4) If your pet is ill, do NOT vaccinate him.  Sick animals should NOT be vaccinated. It is also safer not to vaccinate your pet if he will be undergoing surgery.

5) When you are using flea/tick products, always keep in mind that you are applying chemicals/pesticides on your pet. Those products will end up INSIDE your pet.   Use common sense and make sure that you really need to be applying those.
